‘What Went Wrong’ is the new single from THOMA. But there’s nothing wrong with it? FAKE NEWS!

“Clued up Southend gig goers will likely already be aware of the pop force that is THOMA. Tom Johnston has not only supported Youth Club on their recent run of sold out shows in London and Southend Chinnerys, but has recently recorded his latest upcoming EP ‘Bouquet’ at SS2 Recording, with YC drummer Rees Broomfield behind the mixing desk.

The result is a very pleasing blend of ambient pop and electro. There are Sam Smith comparisons to be had here, but with the polished YC pop production ladened through the layers, this is very accomplished stuff indeed. THOMA‘s latest single ‘What Went Wrong‘ is chilled and really showcases Tom’s incredible vocal range. This man has soul. No question about it. What went wrong? You really should be asking what went right!

The ‘Bouquet EP’ drops in June. We can’t wait for it if this banger of a single is anything to go by.”

THOMA – ‘What Went Wrong’ is out everywhere today. Get your mitts on it right now!

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly return to Chinnerys this Saturday. Here’s why you shouldn’t miss out on their best live show to date!

One of the most unexpected but joyous things to happen last year was the return of Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Having hung up the cape in 2014, few could have foreseen that there would be a 6th studio album. But Young Adult is here, it’s Sam Duckworth’s best work to date. It features a collaboration with Shy FX, as well as the huge singles Adults, VHS Forever and Animate. We’re so glad to have him back!

Hands down, the current lineup for GCWCF is the best it’s ever been. Sam’s band now features Southend’s very own Lydia Kitto, the rhythm section from Pocket Dragon and Linda Burrato who plays guitar for Kate Nash. Add to the mix a full brass section and you have simply one of the most exciting live shows to come out of Southend. The Independent recently heaped high praise on Get Cape’s last London headline show, filled with the perfect blend of old hits and new hits.

2018 has proved to be a rejuvenation for Sam and friends. Get Cape are supporting Frank Turner at The Roundhouse next week, as well as a full festival run including a high billing slot at Isle of Wight Festival in June. With promises of more exciting festival and tour announcements soon, now is the perfect time to see Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, so why not see them right here in Southend at Chinnerys this Saturday?

Support comes from Sean McGowan and The RPMs, with tickets available right here. It’s the best ticket in town, you won’t regret it. These are the moments that we’re living for!

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly play Chinnerys on Saturday 12th May. Tickets available at SeeTickets right now.
Young Adult is out now on iTunes.

Linnen & Friends Set To Soar At Homecoming Charity Show For Essex & Herts Air Ambulance

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Linnen outside of open mic events, so we’re very excited about this full band show at Chinnerys on Thursday 27th April. Linnen exudes exuberance and is one of the most exciting singer songwriters in Southend today.

This special show is a collaboration between Pierview Productions, South Records and Raygun FX, with all profits going to Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, a fantastic life saving organisation.

Support comes from lo-fi rocker newcomers  Blab; (whose debut EP ‘Everything Is Everyone Else’s Fault’ is worthy of your immediate attention) and Orlean, a fast rising troubadour whose songs are simply packed with soul.

With a very special guest also promised, this is a no brainer for your Thursday night this week. Support local music and local charity. Everyone wins!

•••UPDATE•••
The special guest has been confirmed as Longy, who will be playing a short set. What a turn up for the books!

Tickets are £5 and are available here, or £7 on the door. We’ll see you there.

Slim Pickings – Breathing New Life Into The Southend Reggae Scene

The Southend ska/dub/reggae scene has always been an ever evolving community, with the likes of Goldmaster Allstars and Tallowah leading the charge. There are key players in this fraternity of musicians who are passionate about the goings on in this town, so when a group of them united to create Slim Pickings, it was clear that this was going to be something quite unique.

Led by the charismatic Jack Roth, the eight piece dropped their latest single ‘One Life‘ last week off their debut EP ‘Too Broke To Smoke’ due for release in June through Khandha Records. This track is quite something; the reggae framework is lifted by off-kilter guitar solos and Aurelius’ rap helps to sit this contextually higher than other efforts. It seems they’re taking things to the next level, which is great for the Southend scene.

It’s nice to see such a polished video for this track too, shot on location in and around Southend, a great job from Vanloop Media.

This year will see Slim Pickings play some high profile shows in the summer to support their debut release, which is great for all of us. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for more information.

Enter the Outrageous & Unhinged World of The Ears Of Xeno Group

By Mikey Glenister

So let’s get one thing clear right from the start: there is nothing quite like The Ears of Xeno Group in Southend.

They are a experimental psychedelic jazz trio, led by Daryl Tattoo, arguably one of the best guitarists in the country right now (check out his previous band FutureAges, we’ve been fans for a long time).

Last year they released ‘EOX‘, an ambitious instrumental abstract study that really pushes musical boundaries. It’s an effort that is full of subtle grooves, sonic depth and ladened with multicoloured vitality.

When acts this original and earnest rise up, it’s important to recognise the declaration. This is a project that you have to take notice of. The Ears Of Xeno Group captivate your senses. They demand your attention.

Expect new material and new live shows in 2017. In the meantime, plug in a good set of headphones and lose yourself in the spellbinding landscape of The Ears Of Xeno Group.
